Żebbuġ is an old town which served as a city during the times of the Knights of St John and is in fact named Citta` de Rohan, after its founder Grand Master de Rohan. It is found in the centre of Malta and its neighbouring villages include Siggiewi, Attard and Rabat. Żebbuġ consists of an old village core characterised by narrow winding streets and an imposing church set in a large square, as well as more recent developments taking place on the outskirts of the village. The Parish Church is dedicated to Philip of Agira. The name of the town literally means "olives" in Maltese; it derives from the large olive groves that stood in and around the current location of the church and the centre of the town. Ħaż-Żebbuġ is an ideal holiday base. Even though the village is not touristic in nature it is within easy reach of all the hotspots which one might like to visit. These include Rabat, which is only around 5min away by car. In Rabat one can visit Mdina, also known as the silent city and a true gem of Maltese architecture, art and history. In Rabat one might also like to visit the Roman Villa and St. Agatha’s Catacombs. For all those wishing to experience some of Malta’s most breath-taking views then Dingli cliffs is the place to head to and since Dingli village is on the west coast, one can also enjoy a sunset. Attard is a smaller town than either Żebbuġ or Rabat. Here one can visit San Anton Gardens, which form part of the presidential palace. Adjacent to the gardens is Corinthia Palace Hotel which offers its guests a number of spa treatments together with an indoor and outdoor pool. Another town worth visiting is Mosta, which is fairly close to Żebbuġ, perhaps 10min away by car. Here one can visit the Rotunda Church whose dome is amongst the largest in the world, with a diameter of 37 meters. For all those wishing to visit Valletta, the capital city of Malta, then it is within easy reach my means of the public busses which typically leave from Żebbuġ village square around every twenty minutes. Żebbuġ square offers some typical restaurants. More choice can be found in Rabat and Mdina where one may chose to eat a range of cuisines, ranging from local Maltese food, Italian food including pizza and also Chinese food. Attard also offers a number of places to eat, a couple of which are nestled in the church square. If one would like to hit the local clubbing scene then Rabat is definitely buzzing during summer. It is commonplace for the Maltese to start off a typical Friday or Saturday night by having a few drinks in the various pubs and bars in Rabat then later on during the night head to either Gianpula, on a Friday night, or Club Numero Uno on Saturday and Sunday. Alternatively one might opt for Paceville with its endless number of bars and clubs, which is about 25-30min away from Żebbuġ. One should not forget to mention the beaches Malta’s coastline has to offer. Golden Bay and Ghajn Tuffieha Bay are around 30min away by car and one can find vendors who rent sunbeds and umbrellas. At Golden Bay one can also opt to visit the five star Golden Sands Resort, which offers an array of restaurants and spa facilities. Ghadira bay, which is further north, is also popular with tourists and locals alike and can be reached in around 30-40min by car from Żebbuġ.
